Bladerunners Wheelchair Basketball Club
The Bladerunners team was started under the umbrella of the Pretoria North club in 1997 where it broke away and formed its own identity.
The club former members started with 5 players and a coach and quickly grew to a full team of 12 players with the adopted Enthabeleng Elsen School representing its junior development.
The Bladerunners was the first club in South Africa to obtain a sponsorship from a company called Eagle Industrial and in 1998 qualified for the quarter finals of the newly formed SuperSport Wheelchair Basketball Series. They appeared in the 2000 finals and placed runner ups.
From 2001 to 2003 the Bladerunners franchised club was known as the Namitech Bladerunners and made a clean sweep of the SuperSport Series without losing one game in three years which was then followed by qualifying for the 2004 and 2005 finals, where they placed runner-ups.
The Franchised club name change from the Namitech Bladerunners to the Altech Namitech Bladerunners and the final metamorphoses into the Altech Autopage Bladerunners. The Blades have grown from strength to strength and dominate wheelchair basketball in appearing in a total of 9 finals winning in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007 & 2008.
The team has produced 4 Paralympian’s and 7 National & 13 Provincial players from its inception. The South African Captain Marius Papenfus also Captains the Club team. |
