Sasol AmaWheelaBoys to take on NWU VTC at 5th Sasol-NWU Vaal Senior Basketball tournament

Green vs Gold Series moves to Sasolburg this weekend.

 Sasolburg, South Africa – The South African national wheelchair basketball team, the Sasol AmaWheelaBoys, will play an exhibition match against NWU Vaal Triangle Campus (VTC) on Saturday, 15 September 2018 at the Harry Gwala Multipurpose Sport Complex in Zamdela. The game will start at 14:30.

This match will be the highlight of the 5th annual Sasol-NWU Vaal Senior Basketball tournament to take place from 14 to 16 September 2018. Play will start at 16:00 on Friday afternoon, with the semis and finals being played on the Sunday.

Ladies’ and men’s teams from all over South Africa are expected to battle it out for the top three positions. Apart from the coveted champion trophies, the winning teams take home gold medals and R10 000. Silver medalists receive R5 000 and the bronze medalists, R2 500.

Action will continue after the exhibition match, with the Green vs Gold match taking centre court at 15:00. The Green vs Gold series serves as preparation for the AmaWheelaBoys ahead of the African qualifiers, and subsequently for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.

Spears to strong for Mongoose

The Ethekwini Spears will meet the Lions, this coming Saturday in the second of the 2018 Supersport Wheelchair Basketball Series Semi Finals after a hard fought 66-47 victory over the Mongoose this past weekend's quarter final playoffs.

The two sides have met in the SSWBS Final for the past two consecutive seasons, but the Spears had an inconsistent season this year, missing the influences of the former player Sheldon Larsen of New Zealand. They have however improved drastically of the season and will look to their points machine South African International, Thabane Tshange, as well as the veteran Siphamandla Gumbi to spearhead their efforts to send the Lions packing.

The Lions have the advantage of having had last weekend off due to the fact that they finished the pool stages in second position and secured their passage to the semi finals automatically. Boasting a host of National team players including, SA captain Cecil Dumond, Simange Mbhele, Raketsi Molete and Shane Williams, the men from Klerks dorp will go into the encounter as favorites to book their place in the  September 8th Final in Johannesburg at the Vodacom Mandeville Indoor Sports Center.

Amawheelaboys to strong for Supersport All Stars

Sasol Amawheelaboys prove to strong for the Supersport All Stars

Johannesburg, The 5th edition of the Supersport All Star Weekend took place this past weekend at the Vodacom Mandeville Indoor Sports Center in Johannesburg.

The All Star Game has now developed into the All Star Series, where the Sasol Amawheelaboys will take on the Supersport All Star Select team in a best of 5 series, with the winning team taking home the prize money.

The series has been designed to assist the Sasol Amawheelaboys in their preparation for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Qualifiers that will take place next year in August in Morocco (tbc). Despite the continued support of the teams sponsor Sasol, the team is lacking in much needed competition and it is for this reason and due to budget constraints, this series has developed.

The Amawheelaboys have a busy schedule in 2019 leading up to the qualifiers, with possible tours to the USA, Belgium, Spain, Morocco, Japan and Dubai on the cards for the team to prepare.

The Sasol Amawheelaboys were to strong for the Supersport All Stars in Game 1, running out 60-37 winners. Click Here to see the match info.

North West Province, continued their domination of Wheelchair Basketball in South Africa, by winning noth the Senior Men and Senior Women’s Titles at the 2017 Vodacom Challenge, in the process securing R150 000.00 prize money, which will go a long way to aid the province in their development program
