Discovery Mandeville Eagles
Wheelchair Basketball
The Mandeville Wheelchair Basketball Team was formed in 1970 by founder members, Ian Radus, Mike Pretorius, Peter Woods, George Evans, Vic Ryder and a few other players.
Ian Radus, Mike Pretorius, Peter Woods and George Evans made the first SA team in 1975 with Vic Ryder making the SA team in 1977. Between 1977 and 1988 the Mandeville team and the then Southern Transvaal team which was made up of Mandeville player went 11 years unbeaten in club championships
In 1988 some players formed a break away club which played in the colours if RAU for 3 years. In 1993 they then formed the Eagles Basketball team.
In 1995 the Eagles and the Mandeville team re-united to form the Mandeville Eagles. The players that made up the 1st Mandeville Eagles team was: Jaco Van Staaden, Vic Ryder, Grant Waites, Willie Mulder, Leon Fleiser, Dawie VenterĀ Clive Howard and Moses Komeni.
When Discovery came on board as a major sponsor the team was renamed the Discovery Mandeville Eagles and competed as such in the SuperSport Franchised Series

In the 1st year of the SuperSeries 97, the team made the Semi-Finals. In 2000 they competed in the finals and lost to the Pumas. They qualified again for the SuperSeries finals in 2003 and lost to the Bladerunners but was victorious in 2005 when they won the coveted SuperSport Series title against the Lions. After being placed in the top 4 consistently in 2006, 2007 & 2008, they again met the Bladerunners in the finals of the 2009 SuperSeries and took home silver.
Since the formation of the Mandeville team many players such as Mike Pretorius, Vic Ryder, Peter Woods, Ian Radus, George Evans, Chris Carey, Andy Scott, Kevin Smith, Duncan Stewart, Willie Mulder, Viv Sierra, Marcus Retief, Buntu Manyana, Thandile Zonke, David Curle and Richard Nortjie have been awarded National Colours.
In recent times the Mandeville Eagles compete in the domestic leagues and the franchised team now recognised as the Discovery Eagles.
