It is a great pleasure for me to be here in Johannesburg for the 2009 African Cup, the qualification tournament for the 2010 World Championships in Birmingham, UK.
I wish to extend my thanks and the thanks of the Executive Council of IWBF to Wheelchair Basketball South Africa I am confident that we will have a wonderful championship under the guidance of Charles and his committee.
I would like to thank all the IWBF technical officials and the local volunteers for their commitment to the sport of wheelchair basketball. Many have given up holiday time to be here. Without their dedication we would not be able to put on this tournament. Would also like to thank the staff of WBSA and the Vodacom Mandeville Indoor Centre for the great job they do in making us feel welcome at their venue.
While you are here you will have the chance to make friends that you will see at future games, to learn about them and their country, to broaden your understanding of what it takes in other places to have a chance to play. Please use your chance well!
I wish each of you success at the 2009 Africa qualification tournament. Remember that success can be measured in many ways, not just winning, it can be the friends you make, the skills you learn and the enjoyment you have in taking part. On October 10 one team will win the right to represent Africa in Birmingham but all teams will win just by being here.
Best regards,
Maureen Orchard,
President and Secretary General IWBF |
