
TRANSWERK SAINTS
St Giles Sports Club has been involved in disability sport for over 50 years and with this, the inception of the Saints Wheelchair Basketball Team approximately 27 years ago. Saints has participated regularly on club, regional and national level competition. The team comprised of a combination of three clubs, St Giles Sports Club, Warriors and Super Cats, and consisted of 28 disable players, 3 registered able-bodied players and a female player, Fahiema Beckles.
The Saints Wheelchair Basketball Team has produced three national players of which two; Ralph Williams and Shaun Hartnick played at the World Championships in Amsterdam in 2006 and in 2008 were selected for the South African National Team to participate at the Paralympics, Beijing. In addition Shawn Moorgas and Shaun Burrows, both of the National Team, are Manager and Assistant Manager of the Saints Team, respectively. James Housten was later selected to play for a Club in Sydney, Australia.
Since 2002, Saints participated in the SuperSport Wheelchair Basketball Series, but unfortunately Saints reached the finals but lost to Namitech Bladerunners. Since then the Winners title has always been somewhat illusive for the Saints team, but through consistent performance managed to secure a sponsorship from Transwerk, and in 2003 became known as “Transwerk Saints”.
In 2003 Transwerk Saints won 4 out of 7 games and ended in fourth position in the SuperSport Series, however the season of 2004 was dismal and Transwerk Saints just managed to qualify for the 2005 season, but with drafting of new players from the Eastern Cape Saints went through to the second round and finished fifth.
