KZN Wings Wheelchair Basketball Club
A grass roots development club earned its rights to compete in the Franchised SuperSport Series by winning the relegation tournament and knocking out the Wizards to become the 6th team in the league. Established in 1999 under the guidance of Ernest Van Wyk and TJ Witteveen, the KZN Wings established the headquarters for the Southern Conference in 2003.
The club hails from KZN’s Whirling Wheels, headquarters of Disability Sport for Kwa- Zulu Natal.
The bulk of the Wings players formed the KZN Provincial Squad and competed in the Nedbank Nationals in 2004 and 2005 where they received bronze and made the finals of the Vodacom National Championships in 2005.
Under the captaincy of Jeremy Nel, the team produced highs with consistence performances and was rewarded by securing Visa as their franchised sponsor which spurred them on in qualifying for the SuperSport Series 2007finals where that placed runners-up.
In 2008 the new look Visa Wings took the coveted SuperSeries title by beating the Blades in a thrilling final’s.
Several athletes namely Justin Govender, Siphamandla Gumbi, Jeremy Nel and Simanga Mbhele received their national colours both in the National and U23 teams and are regular features in the national team.
The home of KZN Wheelchair Basketball is now based and practicing from the University of Durban Westville and is currently under new management. The team is in a new growth phase facing retirements from former athletes and 2009 will present new challenges as they advance into their 10th year of basketball achievements.
