The Vodacom Blue Bulls swapped their boots for a set of wheels as the took part in the Vodacom Wheelchair Basketball Challenge Celebrity Exhibition match at Vodacom World in Midrand on Saturday 17 October 2015.
The Light Blues had selected a strong contingent that included towering locks Marvin Orie and Irne Herbst, while the fleet-footed Jamba Ulengo and Travis Ismaiel provided some much-needed skills.
Like rugby wheelchair basketball suits players of all shapes and sizes from the tall Orie to the slightly shorter Labuschagne, whose breakdown skills came in handy during the match.
The players got to experience the rough and tumble sport first-hand which was made harder as they competed against Springbok players Trevor Nyakane and Adriaan Strauss.
SuperSport pundit Xola Ntshinga and Bafana Bafana legend Marks Maponyane also had an opportunity to show off their skills on the court.
Spectators were entertained by Vodacom Bulls mascot Bulletjie and the Vodacom Bulls Babes ahead of the action-packed day of basketball.
The Celebrity Exhibition match was the curtain-raiser for the Vodacom Wheelchair Basketball Challenge Final.
On Friday, North-West Province will take on the Eastern Cape, while Kwa-Zulu Natal will play against Gauteng for a spot in the final. The respective winners will face each other in Saturday’s Vodacom Wheelchair Basketball Challenge final which comes with R100 000 in prize money. Wheelchair basketball is not for the faint at heart, as the players play with reckless abandon and the ball is transitioned from basket to basket within seconds.
Vodacom is proud to be a sponsor of wheelchair basketball for the past 17 years.
